He was born to an English mother known as Anne (nee Castle) and an American father also known as Paul Theroux, who was noted for travel writing and novels.
Theroux is a British-American by virtue of the background of his parents. Louis is the nephew of Alexander Theroux, who is also a prominent writer, and Peter Theroux.
Marcel Theroux is also his older brother and he also finds himself in the writing and the television presenting industry.

Louis Sebastian Theroux commenced his educational pursuit as a child at the Tower House School in East Sheen from 1979 to 1980.
